Trust God’s Ongoing Work Within You

God has made it clear that He’s moving in your life. You see the changes within your heart. Where you once were hardened to loving people, forgiving people, or being obedient to God, now you find it impossible not to. You care about God too much, about what He thinks and what He wants. You start your day with the Lord, asking His will for your life. You stay connected with Him throughout the day, and you end your nights in gratitude of His blessings. Yet, with all the time you’re spending with God, it hardly feels like enough. You’re intrigued by Him, curious of His thoughts, and enamored by His nature.

As you engage in conversation with the same people you’ve always done life with, you find yourself talking about God and the things of God more… so much so that it shocks you, too. And while you are experiencing a monumental shift within your spiritual core, you are not afraid. In fact, you want nothing more than to embrace it because for the first time in your life, you have a peace with God that you have never experienced elsewhere. If this sounds like your experience, you’re in the right place.

Let me encourage you by first saying: You’re not crazy. What you’re experiencing is real, it’s radical, and it’s amazing! I want to say things are changing inside of you, but that’s an understatement. Things aren’t changing; YOU are changing. What you’re recognizing is the fruit of a work God began doing in you long before you were aware. God is doing a lifelong work in you, which is why the manifestations of His hand on your life are mindblowing to you. You’re beginning to see how your family, your childhood, your circumstances, and even your choices have all contributed to the work God is doing within your heart. Every aspect of your life until this point is a tool in the potter’s hand to mold you into who He has designed you to be.

As you embrace the healing and restorative power of God at work within you, there’s a mindset shift you will also need to embrace. Because God’s work isn’t complete until we leave this earth, you are always in a process. This level of continual transformation doesn’t always feel good and can be downright nerve-wracking at times. If you want to remain moldable in the potter’s hand, allowing Him to shape your inner being into the image of Christ, here’s what the process demands.

What God’s Process Demands

Your process will require a deeper level of trust, dependency and intimacy with Christ. The more time you spend with a person, the more their tendencies, thoughts, and ways influence yours. Therefore, if we are to be more like Christ, we must spend as much intentional time with Him as possible. While God meets us where we are and welcomes our little in exchange for His much, He expects our desire to know Him and to spend time with Him to grow.

What was once a popcorn prayer in the car on the way to work should grow into an hour prayer at home before starting our day. What was once a verse of scripture that we read occasionally throughout the week should evolve into a chapter we read each afternoon because we’re in awe of God.

We cannot claim to want to know God and never read the letters He’s written to us. We cannot want to spend an eternity in heaven with God if we never want to spend an hour in worship to Him on earth.

When you’ve had a real encounter with God’s presence, the last thing you want to do is leave it. Consequently, the weight of His glory keeps you eager to return to Him again and again in anticipation of meeting Him again.

If your appetite for God is growing rapidly, feed it. You wouldn’t notice the growing appetite of your child and not attempt to satisfy it. The same goes for your spiritual appetite. When you find yourself longing to know more about God, longing to understand His ways, pick up your Bible (or Bible app) and let God speak. Open your mouth in prayer or praise to God. Thank Him for what He’s done for you. Journal about the things He’s showing you, the desires of your heart, and even the questions you still have about Him.

If you haven’t already, you’ll start receiving real-time revelations about who God is and who you are. God will not only show you things, but He’ll also give you confirmations to affirm what He wants to get through to you. And the fun part? You’ll see manifestations of what God has revealed and confirmed to you, which will inevitably increase your trust in and love for Him.

Allow God’s Process

During seasons of rapid enlightenment where God opens your eyes to new perspectives about Him or about who you are, there’s one thing you can do to aid God in His process: let Him work. Here’s how you can do that.

Obey God Without Hesitation

Make it your business to do all that God asks of you in His word as soon as He asks. Don’t assume you have ample time to obey. Do it now! The space between hearing God’s instructions and doing them opens the door for the enemy to deceive you into disobedience. Will you be perfect, never getting it wrong? No. But you should always be in pursuit of God’s will, which is to love God with all of your heart and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. All that God asks of us can be wrapped up in those two commandments.

Surrender to God Without Restraint

When God makes a request of your time, your creative gifts, your finances, or your heart, posture yourself to say yes. Don’t simply say yes with your words, but be swift to say yes with your actions as well. Anything you give up for God, will be returned to you 100 fold. Mark 10:29-30 tells us: Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.”

Pursue God Without Fail

Remain in connection with God, be it through prayer, praise, worship, reading the bible, journaling, watching sermons, or fasting. Make these spiritual disciplines a part of your daily routines, seeking God with everything in you. God promises that if you seek Him with your whole heart, you will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

Stay vigilant, remembering that you have an adversary, the devil, who isn’t happy about your new-found relationship with God. In 1 Peter 5:8, it states “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Therefore, as you are attempting to grow closer to God, the devil will also be actively trying to stop you. And he’s cunning. He doesn’t show up like a big, scary monster eager to devour you. He shows up in less noticeable ways, like pride, legalism, and judgement.

Respect God’s Work

Keep in mind that as you take the brave step of looking in the mirror, it can be easy to inwardly hold up a mirror to others. This is dangerous territory. Just as you acknowledge that God is doing a work in you that started years ago, you must remember that God is also doing a work in others. And we are never to threaten that work. God is serious about this, as He speaks directly to this mindset in His word. Let’s look at Mark 9:42.

If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.

In other words, respect God’s work in others, as your interactions with someone can push them away from Christ. Do not be judgemental of where a person is in their walk with God in comparison to yours. It is God alone who frees us to see and experience Him in our lives. Philippians 2:13 says, “For the one at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure, is God.” Therefore, whatever progress you’re witnessing in your life is a direct result of God’s work in you, not your own.

By judging where a person is in their journey, we overlook the work God is doing within their heart. In essence, we’re judging God’s work. Allow what little you see of a person to lead you to pray for God’s will to be done in them. Then quickly and humbly return your attention to God and what He’s asking of you.

Oftentimes, the work God is doing in you is best actualized alongside the work God is doing in someone else. For example, a person battling with pride might make it easier for you to see and understand your own battle with pride as you engage in conversation with them. God will sometimes use the condition of a person’s heart to mirror a similar condition within your heart that you fail to see on your own.

Or let’s say God wants to work on your ability to be patient. He may bring someone into your life who is battling with procrastination or execution. It would not be beneficial to you to judge that person, but instead, it would benefit you to come alongside them and allow patience to have its perfect work within you (James 1:4).

Stay Encouraged

Despite the challenges that come with transformation, this is an exciting season for you. As God transitions you from who you used to be to who He’s designed you to be, remember that the journey is more than worth it. You are never alone, as God will never leave or forsake you. Some days may be harder than others, but God will be right there with you. Sometimes you won’t understand what God is up to, why He’s taken certain things or certain people from you, and you may doubt that you’re able to be all that God is calling you to be. That is all normal.

Keep seeking God, getting into His word and His presence, and He will give you everything you need when you need it. And on days when life doesn’t seem to make sense, hang tight to Philippians 1:6 – I am sure that God ,who began the good work in you, will keep on working in you until the day Jesus Christ comes again.
